Prince Friedrich Karl of Prussia (pilot) and his observer, arriving at Jagdstaffelschule 1, Valencienes, France, in Albatros C.VII C1239/16 on an unknown date. The Prince commanded Flieger-Abteilung (A) 258, but flew patrols in a single-seat fighter with Jasta Boelke whenever possible. It was during such a patrol on March 21, 1917 that he was forced to land with a bullet in his engine and a slight wound in the foot. He landed in No Man's Land, but while running towards his own lines was severely wounded in the back by Australian troops and later died in captivity on April 6, 1917. (Wilhelm Prien album)

Igor Sikorsky--the Russian Years
One of the premier German fighter units was Jasta 12 whose 16 Albatros D.V's and 2 Albatros D.III's are seen lined up here during the Spring/Summer of 1917. Even the two-seater squadron "hack" aircraft, an AEG C.IV, is marked with the Jasta 12 unit marking of a black tail. The first two aircraft in line are those of Hauptmann Adolf Ritter von Tutschek who commanded the squadron during most of 1917 until he was seriously wounded.
