Over the Front would like to thank artists Russell Smith and Mike O'Neal for their contributions to our new revised website.
Russell's painting, entitled "Lowenhardt" depicts the Jasta 10 commander and German Ace patrolling the front in his signature yellow Fokker DVII. Also on the banner are Manfred von Richthofen aka the Red Baron, Commonwealth ace JTB McCudden, American ace Eddie Rickenbacker and French ace Georges Guynemer. Four slight variations of this banner show different aces in the place of Manfred von Richthofen show Billy Bishop in one, Eddie Rickenbacker by his Spad XIII in one, a close up of Rickenbacker in another and French top gun Rene Fonck in the fourth.
Mike O'Neal's Sopwith Camel image is the 14 October 1918 engagement between 210 Squadron RAF and Jagdstaffel 7. Kennth Unger, a New Jersey native from Madison was credited with an "out-of-control" victory over a black Fokker triplane. This was Josef Jacobs who would survive the combat - and the war - with 44 victories.
Mike O'Neal's next painting is one of Breguets of Escadrille Br. 131. During an attack on Conflans on September 14, along with elements of Br. 132, they came under attack by Fokker D.VII's of JG III including the aggressive pilots of Jagdstafefl 13. No fewer than 5 Breguets were lost to Jasta 13 while the French crews claimed new fewer than 8 Fokkers.
The gorgeous Mike O'Neal painting is actually a fantasy/reality piece. Mike writes that "it shows the three triplanes of the von Richthofen clan - Manfred, Lothar and Wolfram flying over Cappy airfield in 1918. The reality is, the markings on Manfreds and Lothar's airplanes are accurate and the laytout of the field is as well, but the fantasy is that we are no positive the third plane is Wolframs and these three NEVER actually flew together. Lothar was wounded on 13 March and Wolfram did not arrive until after. By April 21 Manfred was dead so this three ship never actually occurred."
